Cuckoo's Nest #3

1. Why does Chieftrust Mcmurphy so much? Becuase in all of the years that chief has been there, McMurphy is the first person to actively display the same type of dislike towards the hospital that he feels himself. 2.How does McMurphy compare to Jesus? He dies for his fellow inmates to escape, and Jesus died on the cross for us. But, this was not his intentions the entire time, so he is not completely like Jesus. 3. Why Chief as the Narrarator? He gives a full perspective because for most the book he is believed to be a deaf mute, so people do not mind saying the truth in front of him.

Cuckoo's Nest #2

In the first part Of the book McMurphy is benefitting while the nurse continues to struggle to keep him down even though it is obvious that Chief cheers for McMurphy I like the Big Nurse she is only doing what she is supposed to McMurphy is just causing trouble he is a troublemaker and the only people that Nurse was hurting were those who she didn't know how to deal with it isn't completely her fault that she doesn't know what to do for them.

Cuckoo's Nest #1

The character that seems to be most like a hero is the narrator, Chief Bromden. It kind of follows the lead on Gatsby where the narrator is the hero. In both books, the narrator tells the story the way it is, assumed to be in a honest way. Even though he doesn't have straight-forward hero traits, if I had to pick a character so far, if would be Chief Bromden. Randle McMurphy is the anti-hero so far in Cuckoo's nest. He does things that would be considered morally wrong, but he is doing them for a right reason. He also does wrong things in order to disrupt the Nurse, who is the villain, so it is accepted by the people. Nurse Ratched is the villain. She does things that makes her seem nice to the patients, but she is secretly doing this in order to gain power and control over the people. Her morals go against what the reader's expected morals would be, so she is a villain.

Gatsby #3

1)In what way is their priority of image best shown in the novel? Gatsby's death shows how self centered and messed up these people's priorities are. Daisy has loved Gatsby for quite some time. She then realizes that this might mess with how she comes off to people. As a result, she goes away with Tom and keeps quiet about the related deaths.
2)How would Gatsby's motive for throwing such lavish parties best be explained? At first, it just seems like Gatsby throws these huge parties for no particular reason. He seems very mysterious and strange. He does not socialize too much at them and just kind of observe. We then figure out his main motive. He has been in love with Daisy for five years, and he hopes that she will show up to one of his parties someday. Mysterious Gatsby is most likely just trying to impress this one girl and not actually having the parties for himself.

1)Determine the hero of the novel and explain Nick is the hero throughout the novel. He has morals similar to the ones of the audience. He even says that he is the only person you can trust. Nick always seem to do the right thing, throughout the whole book. He is very caring and honest, and he is seen in a positive light, especially in contrast to some of the other characters. Nick started out as the hero, and he remained the hero the whole time.
2)What does Gatsby's long love for Daisy say about his character? It says that he does not easily give up, and he falls hard when he falls in love. Even though he has these lavish parties, he does not seek other women at them. You would expect him to be a player since it appears he parties so much. Once you get to know him, he really just hopes Daisy will come to one of the parties sometime. He has loved her for five years and is determined to get her.

Bua Art

The style of this artist is contemporary with cultural twists. His flowy lines contribute to the style by helping to describe the culture. Everything seemed to be laid back, and also the music back then was also flowy. I think jazz music is the equivalent of this and the flowy lines help that as well as the instruments painted. The fisheye look also contributes to the contemporary style and makes the people look distorted. The paintings don't seem happy, but neither do they seem sad. It seems like he is describing a time when music and art is some of the only things that help them to get by during hard times.

Gatsby #2

Fitzgerald does a fantastic job of revealing details to us a little at a time, allowing us to pass and change judgment as the story progresses. Address the following questions in relation to the development of Jay Gatsby: 1) What does the story of the rest of Gatsby past due to our impressions of him? The story of the rest of Gatsby's past leads us to further suspicious. 2) How does your overall impression of Gatsby change over these three chapters - do you like him more, less, and why? I do not like him less because I am not judgement towards people like that.If anything it makes me like him more because he is throwing the parties to find his true love which is nice. 3) How does he affect the way we see Gatsby? It makes us suspicious of his fortunes and leads us to believe that his glamour may be masking something bad. This follows a recurring motif I have found throughout the story that people's riches, looks, marriage, etc is all masking something dark that lays underneath. 4) What does the backstory about Jay and Daisy's past do to our impressions of Gatsby? The backstory gives us an answer as to why Gatsby throws these extravagant parties-which is to get Daisy to come so he can finally see her. Even Gatsby moving close to her was part of his plan to get her back. 5) What is the purpose of Meyer Wolfsheim as a character? He is planted to introduce the bad side of Gatsby. He also gives a background to Gatsby.

Jelly Roll Stomp

1. This music sounds very upbeat and exciting. I can picture people dancing jollily and having a grand ole' time. It sums up the relaxed state of being that upper-class people felt back then. 2. The mood is easy-going, fun and happy. This is helped by the drums and the overall noise level. it is very outgoing instead of dreary. 3. Drinking, dancing and laughing would all accompany this song. I could also see people smoking cigars. It would be at parties and there would be lots of smiles.

Gatsby #1

Looking at first three chapters of The Great Gatsby, make some predictions about these characters and classify them into one of the three categories - hero, antihero, and villain. Give ample reasons for your classification, with support for the text Nick is the hero, Gatsby is the antihero, and Tom is the villain. Nick is obviously the hero because it is from his point of view therefore we see what he wants us to see and the thoughts he wants us to read in order to make us like him, so obviously he is going to appear as a good guy. Nick can appear very relatable and likable as well. For example, he says, "Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." (64). This makes us like him more and think he is trustworthy. I think Gatsby is the antihero because of his parties. Everybody likes parties, so it is easy to like Gatsby because he throws this party, but since he is very elusive character, it makes us suspicious of his reasoning for throwing the parties. This is just like an antihero-he does good things, just not in the best way. Tom is obviously the villain because he is abusive and a cheater. We know he is a cheater and that he isn't very secretive about it because of the line spoken by Miss Baker: "Tom's got some woman in New York" (19). This is shunned upon not only then but now.

Sixteen Military Wives

I think this song is about the social order of people in Amreica. The order of the lyrics make me believe they are trying to say something about the social chain in America. "Fourteen cannibal kings, Wondering blithely what the dinner bell will bring, Fifteen celebrity minds, Served on a leafy bed OF sixteen military wives" The cannibal kings are at the top, and is probably reffering to th government. Then there are celebrities below them, and the rest are the "leafy bed"

Race For The Prize

Race for the Prize by The Flaming Lips is a song about determination. All in all, The Flaming Lips say that one will do virtually anything to get what him/her wants. Some of this song talks about competitiveness, I know this by the line "locked in heated battle for the cure that is their prize." Their competitiveness drives them to do nearly anything to win the prize. Coyne demonstrates this by saying "But it's so dangerous, But they're determined." and "It will kill them." It is safe to say that if it will kill them, then they will do anything for it. Therefore, people not only live to win but also win to live.

Propaganda Quotes

Doubt is an uneassy and dissatisfied state from which we struggle to free ourselves and pass into a state of belief; while the latter is a calm and satisfactory state, which we do not wish to avoid, or to change to a belief in anything else -Charles S Peirce This is interesting to me. We all find ourselves doubting things that we know to be true, and chose to believe things we know to be false.

Duck and Cover

The overt message is to be prepared when an atomic bomb hits. The repeated use of "duck and cover" shows that it is obvious in its message. It chooses to leave out one important piece of information, though. This is that you will die if an atomic bomb explodes near you. The absence of this information pushes the point that you should still duck and cover and persuades people to always be prepared and dissuades people from panicking. But, I still think it is mostly persuasion due to the way it is up front and instructional in its message. It isn't propaganda because they don't purposefully try to make any covert messages. They inadvertently say that our enemies are going to bomb us, with no doubt about it. they made it seem like a natural disaster rather than a preventable threat. They anted to prevent madness and the way they made it seem survivable keeps people calm and safer which is one of the goals of the video.

Destination Earth

The overt message is that oil is good for America and our economy, we know this due to the long informational segment about oil and how it is so enthusiastic about it. The covert message shows how the free enterprise economy of America is better than communism and that we should fear communism because people are not free to do what they like, i.e. drill for oil. Also, the incompetence of the martian when he comes to the U.S. represents the stupidity of communists and subtly says that America is better and more advanced and smarter. It is propaganda because it uses rhetoric to push the greatness of oil onto people. The red planet representing the communist country is a hidden message which makes it propaganda as well. The bandwagon of all of the martians who want to start drilling for oil shows the propaganda, as well as the many uses of glittering generalities about U.S.

Propaganda

The overt message is to not eat bread. The covert message is to help our troops by giving them the bread. She wears red, white and blue to show her patriotism to U.S. It is propaganda because of the hidden messages like the girl in red, white and blue, and how it doesn't come out and tell us that the troops need the bread. It subtly does it in a way that will make it seem more willing.

Clamp Down- The Clash

The song is about WAR. I know this because of the lines "the best years of your life they want to steal", "Is this man a jew" The guitar riff adds to the straightforward affect that the vocalist impressions on the listener. Everything is up front. It is propaganda because of the reference to the sign that says we earn more than you and the constant messages that make people subtly believe their idea.
